How Much Office Space Do You Really Need?

How Much Office Space Do You Really Need?

Whether you are a start up business or an established company looking for more space, the big question you need to answer is, “How much office space do I really need”? It’s pretty easy to figure out. It really just comes down to simple math.

The mathematical equation is this: You take the total square feet of the room, when empty. Then divide by the number of people normally working in it and the number you should get is at least 180 square feet per employee.

This may seem like a big number but this calculation doesn’t include office furniture in Houston so you’ll have to take that into account. This magic number also can fluctuate year after year depending on the trends. The current trend is towards less personal space – allowing for just enough room for workers to have sufficient floor area for purposes of health, safety and welfare. (Basically you need enough room to comfortably work and safely move around).

Having an office space that doesn’t offer an appropriate working area for your staff can cause major issues. Cramped working conditions can be detrimental to office morale and in extreme cases: employees may decide to leave. With regards to health and safety, cramped offices are just not acceptable. But there are ways for you to easily create extra working space in your office. Do these 4 things before you decide to move to a larger office space:

Get rid of the clutter: It’s time to get organized! Remove all excess office furniture and filing cabinets that you or your staff no longer needs. If paper documents are a big issue, consider moving all of it online. You can always print a paper copy if you really need it. Or, consider using an off-site storage unit for storing important files.

Hot desking: Hot desking describes a workspace where employees are no longer assigned their own office desk to work at. Employees are invited to move around and share different office desks when at the office.

Telecommute: If you are struggling for office space, then consider having less people in the office. Let employees telecommute on select days to thin out the amount of employees in the office at the same time.

Office redesign: A lot of times a simple office redesign can open up more space by just modifying the workplace flow. Work with an office designer who can arrange your space more effectively.
