Want To Dominate a Fitbit Challenge? Get a Treadmill Desk
Have you ever been invited to a week long Fitbit Challenge? I was invited last spring and since I needed motivation, decided to join in! During the first day, I killed myself to get the 10,000 recommended steps. Then right before bed, I excitedly looked at the results for “DAY ONE” only to find I was almost in LAST PLACE! If that wasn’t bad enough, the girl in first place logged 30,000 steps!!! How in the heck does that even happen? Did she duct tape her Fitbit to a fan and let it run?! There was no way. That’s fifteen miles….a day?! I called foul! As it turns out, she said she had a treadmill desk at work.
Like many Americans, a large part of my at-home job is done sitting down. I do try and walk three miles a day but research shows that even regular exercise does not offset the perils of sitting for several hours. It’s referred to as “sitting disease”. So, 3 months ago I decided to bite the bullet and get my own Fitbit challenge winning treadmill desk.
I chose the TR800-DT5 Treadmill Desk from Lifespan because they’re the leading manufacturer of treadmill desks and I liked the workstation’s clean design. This model allows you to go up to 4 miles per hour but I tend to settle in around 2 miles an hour. This speed allows me to easily walk and type.

Active Lifestyle Goals
I still have a Fitbit goal of 10,000 steps per day (30,000 is still really unobtainable for me) but I do reach my goal easily in about 2 hours. The great thing about this model is that it has a built in pedometer so I can check it against my Fitbit to make sure I’m getting credit for all of my steps! Not that I’m competitive or anything like that….
I know that many reading this will think the same thing I did 3 months ago. You work an office desk job and all of the best intentions and fancy pedometers in the world will do little to change that. I was right there with you. What the Fitbit Challenge did for me was it brought about a healthy level of competition and provided a lot of insight about my sedentary ways. If nothing else it was a constant reminder to get up and move a little bit more. This treadmill desk has been a life changing investment for me and I don’t have to worry about finding time to exercise when work is over because I’m killing two birds with one stone!
